Centrum voor Gender en Diversiteit

Opzij Chair

The acquisition of the rotating chair, 'Power and Strategy', from the feminist magazine 'Opzij', played an important role in the establishment of the Centre. The Governing Body of the 'Opzij' foundation awarded the professorship to the University of Maastricht in 1997 for a period of five years. This made it possible to establish the Centre to provide a home for it.
Maaike Meijer was appointed as professor for the first year (March 1998-1999). Her task was to give tuition in 'Gender, Representation and Power'.

Liesbet van Zoonen succeeded her for the next two years (February 2000-2002). Her task was 'Gender and Multimedia Communication'.

The third 'Opzij' professor was Marli Huijer (September 2002- January 2006) and she had the task of providing tuition in 'Gender and Biomedical/Health Sciences'.

De task of the fourth ‘Opzij’ professor, Ineke Boerefijn is ‘Power and strategy: Women’s rights. Women in conflict situations’.
Ineke Boerefijn is currently working at the Netherlands Institute of Human Rights at the Utrecht University. She has been appointed the Opzij-chair because of her expertise on the international protection of human rights.
