Apart from teaching and research tasks, the Centre for Gender and Diversity also has a broad social task by concerning itself with the promotion of the cross-pollination between science and society. Therefore the Centre carries out policy directed research, for example, into areas like gender mainstreaming at universities, the likelihood of breaking through the 'glass ceiling' in science and into gender quality in large, national and European research programmes.
In addition, the Centre fulfils its mission to make studies in gender and diversity accessible to a wider public by organizing lectures and symposia, giving advice, maintaining networks, and by giving its support to important undertakings and activities.
Some of these are:
- Organizing public lectures; e.g. 'Opzij' lectures.
- Running workshops and courses.
- Organizing symposia; e.g. about gender and information technology, and gender and historiography (NWO benchmarks).
- Cooperating with women's organisations and other interest groups.
- Working on future scenarios for a policy on diversity. Participating in the activities of the European working group, 'Women in Science', for the European Technology Assessment Network (ETAN).
- The project ZON/MW, conducted by Mineke Bosch and Ilse van Lamoen; an evaluation of the effectiveness of recently implemented measures with a view to integrating diversity into the programmes and projects of ZON/MW (Research about Care in the Netherlands/subject area Medical Science of NWO).
- For the UM the Centre has for a period of 5 years (2000-2005) conducted the university-wide project Onderzoeksatelier, consisting of intensive information for the academic community on how to effectively use the many financial resources, stimulate women, stimulate more applications, organize expert meetings during which concept applications are discussed, organize a yearly Big Money Day, give presentation trainings for the Vernieuwingsimpuls, coach female (but also male) scientists. These initiatives have been transferred since 2005 to the current Knowledge centre, which continues all the activities of the Onderzoeksatelier. Commitment to more gender equality at the top has found a wider platform.
- Presentation trainings and coaching office (with coaches directed by Maaike Meijer). The Centre has played an innovating role in this.
